did you know the smallest part of Isla Mujeres is its island?

Thousands of people visit Isla Mujeres every year, basking on its pristine beaches and hanging out in bar swings until the sun goes down. For an island of merely 13 kilometers in length, it’s beauty has made it a world recognized name.

Isla Mujeres, which translates to mean Island of Women, remains a hotspot for tourists around the globe, many of whom, return year-after-year. Yet, very few realize that Isla Mujeres is actually a municipality of not only the small island they visit, but one of 1,100 square kilometers that includes a large continental mainland.

The tiny island is barely visible when compared to the whole municipality

As a matter of fact, the continental mainland of Isla Mujeres is far greater in size than the tourist island version most have come to know. The municipality, which includes the small island and the large chunk of mainland, is home to more than 20,000 people and includes other areas such as Ejido Isla Mujeres, Francisco May and Punta Sam.

Nearly all of the new developments you may read or hear about are built on the mainland of Isla Mujeres. The mainland also consists of pristine beaches and turquoise waters since the east side rests along the Caribbean. There are dozens of new hotels in Isla Mujeres, none of which are on the island since the isla (island) is extremely small and relatively full.

If you’re visiting Isla Mujeres but staying on the mainland, it’s a simply ferry ride to the island where you can see what all the fuss is about.
